Vale S.A.

Vale S.A., formerly known as Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, is a Brazilian mining and metals company that produces and sells iron ore and iron ore pellets for use as raw materials in steelmaking. Founded in 1942, the company is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and operates through two segments: Ferrous Minerals and Base Metals. The Ferrous Minerals segment produces and extracts iron ore and pellets, manganese, ferroalloys, and other ferrous products; and provides related logistic services. The Base Metals segment produces and extracts nickel and its by-products, such as gold, silver, cobalt, precious metals, and others, as well as copper.

Vale S.A. is one of the world’s largest producers of iron ore and pellets. In 2018, the company produced 320 million tonnes of iron ore and 11 million tonnes of iron ore pellets. It also produced 2.9 million tonnes of manganese ore, 5.8 million tonnes of ferroalloys, and 1.9 million tonnes of nickel. Vale S.A. is the world’s largest producer of nickel, with a production of 1.9 million tonnes in 2018. The company also produces copper, gold, silver, and cobalt.

Vale S.A. is a publicly-traded company with shares listed on the São Paulo Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. It is also one of the largest companies in Brazil by market capitalization. In 2018, the company reported a revenue of $37.7 billion and a net income of $7.4 billion. The company has a global presence, with operations in over 30 countries, and employs approximately 81,000 people worldwide.
