The company also produces iodine and its derivatives for a range of medical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, industrial, and other purposes, including x-ray contrast media, polarizing films for LCD and LED screens, antiseptics and biocides, pharmaceutical synthesis, electronics, pigments and dye components, as well as for use in the manufacturing of gunpowder. SQM also produces lithium carbonates, lithium hydroxide, and other lithium derivatives for a variety of applications such as electrochemical materials for batteries, frits for the ceramic and enamel industries, heat-resistant glass, air conditioning chemicals, and continuous casting powder for steel extrusion.

SQM was established in 1968 and, since then, has grown to become one of the largest players in the specialty mineral, chemical, and fertilizer industries in Latin America. SQM’s stock is part of the Merval Index, the benchmark index of the Santiago Stock Exchange, and is traded under the symbol SQM. In addition, the company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the Santiago Stock Exchange under the symbol SQM. The company has a market capitalization of over US$15 billion, making it one of the largest companies in Chile.
