Smith-Midland Corporation

Smith-Midland Corporation is an American precast concrete products manufacturer through its subsidiaries. Founded in 1960 and based in Midland, Virginia, the company specializes in inventing, developing, manufacturing, marketing, leasing, licensing, selling, and installing products designed for the construction, highway, utilities, and farming industries.

One of the company’s main products is SlenderWall, a patented lightweight and energy-efficient concrete and steel exterior wall panel used in building construction. The company also manufactures Sierra Wall, a sound and sight barrier used beside highways, and J-J Hooks highway safety barriers used for traffic control in construction work zones. Additionally, Smith-Midland offers Easi-Set precast building options, Easi-Span expandable precast buildings, Easi-Set utility vaults, SoftSound soundwall panels, Beach Prisms erosion control modules, and H2Out secondary drainage systems.

Smith-Midland’s products are marketed throughout North America, with licenses being granted into Canada, Australia, Belgium, Mexico, New Zealand, and Trinidad. They are distributed primarily through an in-house sales force and independent sales representatives to contractors working in public and private construction contracts. Major contracts have included everything from commercial buildings to public and private roads and highways, airports, and municipal utilities.

The company experienced a period of rapid expansion in the 1980s due to its successful SlenderWall product line. In 1991, Smith-Midland opened an additional manufacturing facility in Reidsville, North Carolina, and currently operates two plants in the U.S. Smith-Midland continues to grow, with over 25 million square feet of walls sold in more than 18 countries and over 90 million square feet of walls installed in projects all over the world. Smith-Midland is still headquartered in Midland, Virginia, and employs over 400 people.
