It was founded in 1997 and has since grown to 140 new vehicle franchises, representing 28 different brands of cars and light trucks, as well as 17 collision repair centers and 46 EchoPark stores across 16 states. Of the 46 EchoPark stores, 11 of them are Northwest Motorsport pre-owned vehicle stores. Sonic Automotive, Inc. is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Sonic Automotive, Inc. operates in two segments, Franchised Dealerships and EchoPark. The Franchised Dealerships segment is focused on the sale of new and used cars and light trucks, along with providing vehicle maintenance and manufacturers warranty repair, as well as paint and collision repair services. This segment also arranges extended warranties, service contracts, financing, insurance, and other aftermarket products for its guests. The EchoPark segment, on the other hand, sells used cars and light trucks and arranges finance and insurance product sales for its guests in pre-owned vehicle specialty retail locations.
