Originally founded in 1994 as part of the merger of Memphis-based Manor Care, Inc. and Mid-Atlantic Realty Trust, the company has since expanded its geographic footprint across 16 states and the District of Columbia from its original roots in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. MAA became a publicly-traded company in 1995, going on to list on the S&P 500 in 2003.
At the end of 2020, MAA had ownership interest in 102,772 apartment units, including communities currently in development.
