Macy’s, Inc. is an iconic and beloved omni-channel retail organization that operates stores, Websites, and mobile applications in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, and Al Zahra, Kuwait. The company sells a wide range of merchandise including apparel and accessories for men, women, and children, cosmetics, home furnishings, and other consumer goods. As of January 29, 2022, it operated 725 department stores in North America and the Middle East under the Macy’s, Macy’s Backstage, Market by Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bloomingdale’s The Outlet, Bloomies, and bluemercury brands. Additionally, Macy’s is also a beauty products and spa retailer with several licensed shops.

Initially founded in 1830 by Rowland Hussey Macy in Massachusetts, Macy’s started as a dry goods store, selling items such as fabrics, hosiery, ready-made clothing and housewares. The company’s first store opened in 1858 in Herald Square in Manhattan. Over the years, Macy’s expanded from coast-to-coast, becoming the largest department store chain in the US by the end of the 19th century. In 1905, the company merged with its main competitor, the Abraham & Straus department store. In 1994, Macy’s acquired the Federated Department Stores, Inc. and changed its name to Macy’s, Inc. in June 2007.

Along with its retail stores, Macy’s also offers a mobile app with exclusive offers, shopping tools, and free shipping when customers purchase items from the app. The company also operates special service counters such as the visitor service center and the tourist welcome center in New York. An important part of Macy’s mission is to give back to the communities in which it operates, with donations allocated to providing basic needs, education, civil rights, and environmental sustainability.
